Xmas Handout Quiz 2008! The resident quizmaster, Jonathan Storey, has again compiled a Christmas Handout Quiz, in aid of the Rotaract Overseas Project (see below). If you haven't already bought a copy, click here to download an online version, which you can print out, fill in, and then send to the specified address with a cheque for £1 by January 5th. Tom gets onto ROP team! President Tom Watkins has been accepted onto the 2009 Rotaract Overseas Project (ROP). He will be part of around fifteen Rotaractors and Rotarians going to Gambia for two weeks in January/February 2009. The main aims of the project are to build walls at a village clinic, install wells and stroage sanks and build a washhouse to assist the ladies with their laundry duties. Each member must raise about £800 for flight costs, plus help to raise a part of the £12,000 project costs that will be incurred. Because of this, Derby Rotaract's fundraising efforts for the first half of the new Rotaract year (July - December) will go towards the Gambia Project. Read more about the exciting project here. Claire and Jon go to India! Past President Claire Hall and Jonathan Storey are leaving us temporarily to go on an 11-week volunteering placement in Kurseong, a small community in North-east India about 30km from Darjeeling. The three main aims of the project are centred around education, healthcare and agriculture. They will be teaching English and music in local schools in the community, plus some basic IT skills. The healthcare work will be a mixture of helping out at the local clinic and assisting on local visits, as well as spreading awareness of HIV/AIDS. As well as this, there is opportunity to get involved in conservation work, e.g. planting trees, tending nurseries, learning new agricultural practices and promoting the necessity for conservation. We look forward to hearing all about it when they are back in September! |
